Suggested programmes for Scotland

Below are a number of programmes for M&L being considered in Scotland with some explanatory notes.

Management and Leadership programmes based on Action Learning are particularly powerful and successful. Before looking at some of the programmes that are on offer in Scotland under this banner it is worthwhile to check out exactly what Action Learning is.

This datasheet introduces Action Learning as a major solution to many Management and Leadership issues faced by companies of all sizes – but particularly micro businesses and small to medium-sized enterprises. The datasheet will also link you into the 20 point good practice model that all action learning should be based on. 

1. Business Fix Action Led Business Improvement programme – Business Fix were involved in the first pilot in Scotland and are building an excellent reputation for delivering Action Learning programmes across a number of sectors (although they’re expensive).

Social Enterprise Academy - SEA – This organization has a number of qualified and experienced Action Learning facilitators offering a range of M&L modules which all use an action learning approach; examples included here can be delivered with the suggested content or delivered to suit your needs. They can lead to certification by the Institute of Leadership and Management or without certification depending again on your needs:

Action Learning - community of practice outline - The Social Enterprise Academy is keen to develop a Community of Practice of Action Learning facilitators who will be quality assured and certificated Action Learning practitioners. Two possible programmes can be offered – both are certificated by the ILM.

It is important to the SfBn that employers are able to contact quality assured action learning facilitators and so a programme to train and build capacity here is vital for the future.

4. Scottish Leadership Foundation – was launched in the spring of 2001 with a clear remit to focus on raising the quality of leadership in Scotland's public services in line with the new Scottish Parliament's modernising agenda. It is a membership-based organisation with membership open to public services bodies such as the National Health Service, Further and Higher Education establishments, Voluntary Sector organizations and a small number of private companies and individuals. The Scottish Leadership Foundation also work with a number of key professional M&L partners eg Dancehammer – a well known transformational leadership training organization – an example of a specialist programme for women is included below.

5. The Dynamic Leadership Centre in Erskine is home to Changemasters who have been inspiring and transforming leaders for 16 years. They have a Dynamic Leader programme spread over 9 months and a series of one-day workshops that focus on key aspects of leadership including:

  • Facilitating Meetings and Delivering Briefings
  • Running Motivational Appraisals
  • Personal Power and Confidence
  • Persuading and Influencing

8. Institute of Directors in Scotland - The key role for the IoD in Scotland is to provide help, support and guidance for directors and other business leaders. By doing so they aim to help them develop and function even better - so helping the businesses to thrive and in turn the Scottish economy to grow.

Learning Works is an excellent site run by Highlands and islands Enterprise - it has up to the minute information and advice on skills and skills development; access to a range of courses and training providers across a range of topic areas including management and leadership; access also to a range of really useful business diagnostic tools which all free and easy to use; access to information on funding sources and many other resources.
